Northeast Travel From MinskYou cannot say that Belarus is a country too touristy, really. However, with some destinations that we should know. At least to know more about the history, culture and art offering that corner former Soviet Union.

One of its major cities is Brasov, located an hour’s drive northeast of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. It is easily reached as it is connected to the main road and has a railway station. Founded in the early twelfth century, named after its founder, Boris Vseslavich, Prince of Pilots.

Originally belonged to the Great Principality of Lithuania, and soon became one of the most important commercial cities in the area. It was not until the late eighteenth century the Russian Empire annexed. Years later, in 1812 Napoleon suffered around Brasov a decisive defeat in his wanderings through Russian territory, specifically the River Berezina.

Interestingly, some remnants of the Russian artillery battery in 1812 can be found on the right bank of the river Berezina. History has shaped the course of Brasov such an extent that, each July 1st, we celebrate the most important festival in the city, which commemorates the day in which Brasov was liberated from the Germans in World War II in 1944.

One of the great monuments of the city is the Cathedral of Brasov, built in the early nineteenth century. Hermosa is also the Plaza Viejas, also dating from the nineteenth century. In the center of this square is the imposing Cathedral of the Resurrection. Near the cathedral is a monument to Boris, the founder of the city, which was erected in 2002.
